How a Newborn Photography Session Works | Red Deer and Calgary Photographer

A Newborn Photography Session.

Calgary Newborn Photography Session by Suzanne Taylor Photography

I decided to write this blog post to help you understand how a newborn photography session works with Red Deer and Calgary award winning photographer, Suzanne Taylor Photography.  To start, I really want to honor and emphasize that how I capture newborn sessions are not the same as other photographers in your area.  There are a LOT of different ways to photograph a newborn and personally for me the best way to do that is to capture the newborn as a newborn and not to complicate it at all.  I have EXTREMELY talented friends in the industry that can pose a newborn beautifully as well as wrap them and utilize props that I just don’t use.  It is not my style and for years I battled myself trying to ‘fit the mold’ that would have me be able to pose babies in almost complex ways so that they would be not only beautiful but also art.

Fast forward several years and one day I woke up and thought to myself “I hate this”.

Its true.  I hated everything about every newborn photography session I completed.

Baby Led Sessions.

So I came to terms with that but felt really sad because I loved the idea of photographing newborns.  I quickly came to the conclusion that folding and bending babies was not my personal style that fit into my Fine Art branding and I had to find a solution to this.  Ironically enough, the solution was found in the framework and methodology of my previous career as a social worker.

As a social worker, I worked a lot with families who had difficulties within their own family systems.  One theory I always subscribed to was ‘baby-led’ or ‘child-led’ when it came to parenting advice, sleeping, etc.  This theory merely suggests that any direction or intervention would follow the lead of the baby or child.  Often with attachment theory, you are wanting to connect the child to the parent and the parent is asked to interact with the child on THEIR terms.  While I won’t go into further detail about that, what I thought of that day was why don’t I try to conduct the next newborn photography session like I would conduct an intervention within my previous social work career?  From that point on, I literally ditched all of the extra props, backgrounds, hats, buckets, etc. and decided that natural was the best way to go.

During a Newborn Photography Session – whether it be in Red Deer, Calgary or somewhere else in Alberta I will come directly to you.  I am always happy to travel to your home in order to capture your newborn session in the most comfortable place possible after you give birth to your child.  Coming to your home limits travel and germs that may be uncomfortable for you as well as unhealthy for your newborn.  Also, I always bring my lighting equipment so that if your home isn’t quite bright enough, we can make it work.

Personalized, In-Home Sessions.

I will come to your home and photograph both your newborn and family members (if desired) with the new little bundle of beautiful joy.  Typically a newborn photography session lasts between 3-5 hours depending on the environment as well as your newborn.  Some babies are very relaxed and sleepy – others are very spirited and often will take several feedings and a good pee and poop (or several) before they are ready to nod off to sleepy land.  This is expected and I am happy to keep the session stress free and happy, so I encourage you to take as many breaks as necessary to ensure happiness is the main goal.

Once I have completed your session, I will contact you within 1-2 weeks to set up a time to go through your images.  You’re free to purchase what you like from your session – there are no minimums and no maximums to your session products and at the end of the day, I want you to be happy with your purchase.  I am not pushy – nor will I encourage you to purchase anything you are unsure about.  Your order session must be complete the day it is booked, but I am happy to spend usually between 1-2 hours helping you to decide what you like the best from the session to have printed on paper, metal, canvas or to have forever as a digital copy.

I am always happy to answer any questions you may have about newborn sessions.  Please go the menu and click on the “contact us” form.  I check emails about 3-5x a day depending on how my day is scheduled so you can normally expect a reply within 24-48 hours.

Warmly,
Suzanne
