Newborn Photography in Calgary & Why You Need It | Suzanne Taylor Photography

Newborn Photography in Calgary

Newborn Photography in Calgary has exploded in the area in the last 5 years.  I remember when my oldest was born, I took photographs in my style because I could – but to be honest, we were new to a much more populated area (we used to live more rural) and newborn photography was a market that I had not been exposed to yet.  The pictures I took of my oldest were beautiful moments when I was savoring the magic of not working for the first time ever and spending my days alongside one the best little humans I had ever met.  He was the most beautiful baby and I took every opportunity I could to capture his huge blue eyes, big cheeks that looked like they were going to overflow any second and those sweet little cupids bow lips.  I took pictures of his fingers, his boxy little toes and any part of him that I thought I needed to so I never forgot those moments together.  I did plan to just go back to work and then have just one more child at some point, so I knew I needed to make the most of my time with him and capture as much as I could.  Little did I know he would end up with his triplet siblings just a short two years later and I would take my photography career to new heights and focus on capturing newborns through Fine Art photography.

How Suzanne Taylor Photography Came to Photograph Newborns as Art

Despite my ignorance of the field when my oldest was born, I came to very slowly embrace the art of newborn photography.  I shied away from pursuing newborn photography because I never really cared for the ultra ‘posy-posy’ style of newborn photography that so many of my friends practiced.  For me, it was a comfortability issue with bending and balancing newborns to get that ‘perfect shot’.  I didn’t have the skill for it…and to be honest I also didn’t have the drive for it.  I never found photographing newborn babies in pots and buckets was terribly awesome and it turned me off.  That being said, I so appreciate the art and the people who can make it look amazing.  It just isn’t my style…like neon clothes and perms…it just isn’t me.

The benefit of breaking into the Newborn Photography in Calgary market though is that it is year round work.  Domestic photographers have it ROUGH in Alberta as we have such a short window of time to make full years worth of income to offset the extremely slow winter months.  The birth rate in Alberta is also extremely high and there are numerous babies born every day in the City of Calgary, City of Red Deer and the City of Edmonton – as well as those places in between and throughout the rest of Alberta.  We like having babies here and over the last several years, I figured out how Suzanne Taylor Photography was going to brand her own Newborn Photography in Calgary (and Red Deer mainly) and elevate it above the average newborn session.

Why Newborn Photography in Calgary is Art Worth Investing In

Why would you invest in Newborn Photography in Calgary (or elsewhere in Alberta)?  Let me share with you some of the reasons why families make the decision to invest in this beautiful art form to decorate their homes and lives with.

The first is that newborns are only small for the first two weeks.  All Newborn Photography in Calgary sessions happen between 5-12 days postpartum – or if early 5-12 days since discharge from the hospital or care facility.  This gives the newborn time to adjust to life on the ‘outside’ as well as establish a slight routine and get feeding (either breast or bottle – no judgment here!) accustomed to.  After the two week mark, a newborn begins to look and act a lot like a baby.  The baby know has slight expectations, knows that if they cry they are attended to and tend to be much more alert and ready to interact.  They also lose their belly button cord, any super downy hair starts to disappear and the skin starts to dry out and flake.  Before you know it, the newborn is a baby and all of a sudden you are on your way to having a one-month-old.

The second reason is that of all the art you could have in your home, images of your newborn will become some of your most prized images you hang or display.  Your newborn is part of you and for the wonderful customers of Suzanne Taylor Photography, most agree that there is nothing they would like to display on their walls more than images of their children, from the moment they are born to the present.

That being said, if you saw my house you would be either amazed or horrified at all the images I have on my walls.  It is a tribute to our family, my children and the relationship we share within the home environment between each other.  The reason my walls are so stuffed full of beautiful images, however, is because I love the art that has been created.  Each year, I get a new photography to capture our family because perspective is important and it never hurts to have someone new capture a different style of image (so long as you like their work of course).  Part of the success Suzanne Taylor Photography has experienced has been because of the style of image that I create.  Suzanne Taylor Photography takes a lot of pride in creating images of your Newborn Photography in Calgary session that look like art and not just a snapshot or semi-professional image of your newborn child.  The images that come from these sessions are refined, sophisticated and always timeless.

Lastly, these newborn photography images of your child become part of your child’s story.  I was very lucky and was blessed with a Mother who was a stickler for detail, and while I was a child of the ’80’s and don’t have thousands and thousands of images of me as my children have thanks to the digital age, she did a great job capturing these records.  She has beautiful albums, sorted, categorized, labeled and as an adult, I deeply cherish the effort, time and cost she spent ensuring that these memories would be preserved as long as possible.  They are my history and for every image, there is a story that is attached to it and those are so beautiful to now share with my children who are 6 and 4.  They find so much pleasure in looking at these images and putting themselves in my shoes while learning to tie my shoes, ride my bike, go hunting for Easter eggs or whatever else my Mom thought was important to expose when a film was the only way to capture an image.

The Importance of Details – Newborn Photography in Calgary

Details are so important when having Newborn Photography in Calgary done.  Suzanne Taylor Photography takes the time to make sure that the smallest details are captured such as hair, fingers, toes, body hair, eyelashes, spit bubbles, belly button, etc. so that you never forget the essence of their features.  These are aspects that no parent should ever forget – they change so fast you will never see it coming until the day comes that you realize those little things have changed and are gone forever.

When is the best time to book Suzanne Taylor Photography for Newborn Photography in Calgary?

It is always best to look at booking your Newborn Photography in Calgary shoot (or any location) at least two months before so that we can get your session booked, discussed and have some leeway time just in case the gestation ends early or if there is extended time in the NICU.  While certainly, no photographer wants to have that happen (or parents), it is important to a photographer to have enough time to wiggle around dates in case things don’t work out as expected.  After having two pregnancies and four babies out of those births, I know what it is like to try and manage the crazy that goes along with birth and the recovery time that is required for both a common and uncommon pregnancy.

That being said though, Suzanne Taylor Photography has gone through some amazing efforts to accommodate just about every newborn sessions that have been booked through her, so if you’re past the two months ‘to go’ mark and your interested in hiring Suzanne Taylor Photography for your session, please inquire by emailing hello@suzannetaylorphotography.com and we will see what we can do to fit your session and beautiful newborn in.

Warmly,
Suzanne
