The Art of Posing Toddlers | Red Deer Photography

Red Deer Toddler Photography.

I wanted to talk to night about a little topic that isn’t discussed very often within the photographic community and that is the topic of Toddlers.  To be exact – posing the little creatures, especially when they do not want to be posed during Red Deer Toddler Photography sessions.  I use the term ‘creature’ as a serious term of endearment, however there are days that little kids just can’t.  It’s not that they want to disappoint, rather they literally cannot do what you want them to do.  This is the point that so many photographers (and parents – lets be honest) give up.  As a parent of 4, and when I had 4 kids 2 years of age and younger (much younger) I felt that annoyance and frustration.  I also though decided that if I wanted to remember ANYTHING about the first year or two of my triplet’s life I would have to start photographing.  Red Deer Children are beautiful by Suzanne Taylor Photography. Learning What Works.

It is a very common question I get regarding my photography in how I get toddlers ESPECIALLY to cooperate during my sessions.  I have taken hundreds of beautiful images over the last several years that has led me into the specialization of Red Deer toddler photography (and child photography of course).  I can’t begin to express to you the amount of hours I have spent photographing children over the last few years.  Over those countless hours I developed techniques, methods and a very fast reaction time to capture moments that would otherwise go missed.

Red Deer Toddler Photography is one of the hardest genres to learn.

Waiting…

While I am not one to divulge all of my secrets, I think the best piece of advice I can offer is to wait study and watch your subject.  Kids will be kids and I guarantee that there is no way to make a child incapable of following directions follow directions.  I really need to stress that if your subject cannot sit still, you better have a whole lot of distractions to make sure that your subject can give you even 20 seconds of calm to do what you can with your camera.

The background used during this red deer toddler photography session by Suzanne Taylor Photography is Thunder Grey.

There is no magic spell I have that allows me to capture what I have over the years and what I hope to capture over many years to come.  What I capture is what I set out to capture with all of my work.  A genuine reflection of my subject and the emotions they are feeling in the moment.  I like to make sure that the viewer of my work feels like they could have been there in the moment the image was captured.  That is part of why Red Deer toddler photography has been such a beautiful part of my business and why I am always looking for new customers with beautiful children to photograph in the Red Deer and Calgary Area’s of Alberta (and surrounding areas of course).  Don’t ever miss an opportunity to capture your child on film – either yourself or through a professional – today will never happen again.
