I did a quick, last minute photography mini session in Calgary a few weeks back with a lovely women by the name of Beverly and her beautiful little boy.
Fall is a wonderful time of year to embrace not only the beautiful colors but also the amazing light that you only get in Alberta in the fall months. There is an amber hue to it and it is hella bright depending on the time of day that you do your session. The bright sun does not concern me as a photographer…everyone always prefers overcast but let’s face it…without the sun you don’t get those golden tones. So what to do?
Embrace it.
There is a wonderful quality of love that happens with the fall light. This little boy and his mom were so happy and we kept moving around till we found all of the light we were looking for. The thing about light is that it is always somewhere – you just have to be prepared to find it and make it work for you and your shooting style. If your not there, keep practicing till you are and take advantage of a condition that scares so many photographers away.
This little boy was so full of life and fun – I adored watching him move naturally and playing with his very loving and caring mom. He was a real charmer and was an excellent trooper for the full time we met…which went over the 15 min that I allot for mini sessions, but wrapped up nicely by 25 min I would say. As a child photographer I find that many kids can’t really go past 20 minutes without staying engaged. It is really hard for them, especially the littles as they are distracted by everything and then hungry immediately when the flow kicks in and you know as a photographer that you are getting gold.
We shot this session just south of Canada Olympic Park in Calgary Alberta up in a pathway area and it was my first time I had ever shot anyone there. It didn’t look terribly promising when we first started but when we started to explore we found exactly what we were looking for and we had so much fun creating these beautiful images that will never be forgotten or misplaced in their lives. The moments that I captured for them are the moments that keep me going as a photographer. September and October is when most photographers make a lot of their income and it has been likened to April when accountants are busy with taxes. There is no time for anything else except shooting and editing but really the process of capturing and developing art for my customers is one of the funnest things I can imagine myself doing while it is not quite warm enough through the day to go exploring with my own children but not quite cold enough to just sit and be sad it isn’t summer anymore.
I really want to thank you Beverly for hiring me to do these images for you. I know you have been waiting very patiently for them and the process of developing images is not a fast one in my world. I carefully handcraft each image so that they are perfect in my eyes and the best possible quality that you can expect from First Blush Photography. I have been a professional for 8 years now and over the years I have learned that rushing any editing job will never give the customers the images that they expect and that would just be the saddest event ever if you got back images that were just ‘good enough’ – an issue that plagues our industry terribly.
Enjoy your images and I look so forward to photographing your little man as he grows into the handsome little man he is going to.
All the best,
Suzie
