Calgary Family Photography – Magic in the Making

Several weeks ago I had the opportunity to meet and photograph a wonderful Calgary family – likely some of the nicest I have ever met.  I know I say that a lot, but this family really was so warm and welcoming.  Sometimes when you meet people you wonder if you will click or not but you hold your breath and hope for the best.  What I saw though when I approached them was the two cutest twins I had ever seen and parents that greeted me with smiles and excitement.  I knew this Calgary family was going to be a very awesome session.

Planning to photograph a Calgary family with multiples

When you are photographing multiple children like I have done over the last several years, you have to make a plan and stick to it.  This Calgary family was no different in bringing fraternal twins to the session.  Little S & S were moving like crazy and really enjoyed the opportunity to explore the natural area we were photographing at.  Fish Creek Park in Calgary is a photographer’s haven and provides such a beautiful place to shoot anyone really.  They enjoyed the dirt, the leaves, the grass and the sticks that were plentiful everywhere around us.

Wildflowers and Calgary Family Photography

Some of my favorite moments capturing this Calgary family was all the wildflowers that we stumbled across a the height of their bloom.  We came across a small patch (because let’s face it – we live in Alberta and wildflowers are NOT abundant) and I had to photograph this Calgary family in them.  As the family is of Persian descent the skin tones, outfit color choices and hair color contrasted AMAZINGLY against this beautiful late summer backdrop and it was perfect.  Mom and Dad were quite creative and before we knew it there were flowers in shirt pockets and behind ears creating perfect moments to be captured and enjoyed forever.

Simple is better

Bringing a very simple prop was also the key to success with these two adorable babies.  Never underestimate the importance of a simple toy or activity for kids to enjoy themselves with.  Even lately at my own home I have found that simple foam blocks have trumped the toys that make noise and move and are played with EVERY DAY several times – not just for a few minutes.  They love to be creative and by bringing something special it doesn’t become the focus of the image.  Another photographer was doing a session behind us (I edited her out) and had so many props with her.  I prefer to keep things simple so that kids can stay kids and just do what comes natural to them.  If you watch, kids are the best subjects to photograph because they move naturally and without restriction (physical and mental).  They will also do the darndest things from time to time that make for amazing opportunity – something that is lost if their little minds are bogged down by too much ‘stuff’.  I opted for an old fashioned step stool I picked up at a local antique store the day before and it was perfect…

Calgary Family Honesty Shines Through

Nothing topped the smiles from this Calgary family though like just spending time with each other, interacting and sharing so many beautiful laughs and moments together.  The essence of this Calgary family was love – I could see it a million miles away and the graceful patience of both Mom and Dad.  They adore their children and that is always the very best you can hope for when you’re photographing a family session.  It makes the pictures you capture real, beautiful and honest and to me that makes the very best images.

Thank you so much for allowing me to capture your Calgary family Mom and Dad.  Your children were a beautiful ray of sunshine on an otherwise stormy day and I feel very fortunate that I was selected by you both to capture these special memories for your family.

I hope you love your images.
