Family Photography in Calgary | Suzanne Taylor Photography
The months of November through to April/May in Alberta is some of the slowest times of the year for family photography in Calgary. One of those reasons is because it is really, really cold. Alberta has a very exciting climate and the further South the more bizarre it can be. Where I live near Central Alberta however, it has been a VERY cold winter – as cold as it was about four years ago. Just last week they closed the schools down because of the ‘extreme cold’ warning that we woke up with. That being said however, occasionally you get a break in the cold – or a family brave enough to conquer the elements to have a session done. This session was a beautiful family photography session in Calgary placed in the dead of winter – during a windstorm – with a friend that moved to sunny South Africa several years ago and her family.
The Cold Never Bothered Me Anyway….
That is a lie. I just was thinking to how Frozen I felt that day and ergo the song popped into my head. Good job hey? I am going to tell you, when booking this photography session, Mom and I went back and forth several times trying to decide if a Mini Session was appropriate or if a Full Session was in order (you can read about the difference HERE). After many emails, Mom decided that a Mini Session would likely suit the bill and we were booked. The day of the shoot I couldn’t have been happier with that decision. It was cold that day – but what made it so much worse was the wind that would NOT let up. We were also shooting in an open field and the wind was relentless. It blowed and blowed and and continued to blow long after we finished the photography mini session.
So Much Fun…
That darling little boy was dressed well for the day and ADORED his sled. That paired with his beautiful Mommy and and handsome Daddy sold me on family photography in Calgary in the Winter – especially when the sun is out and it looks like you are shooting against a field of diamonds as the crystals twinkle in the sunshine. That little guy spent a lot of time staring as those sparkles and the captivation he felt was contagious.
Pure Love.
I think what I enjoyed the most out of this session of family photography in Calgary was watching the family interact together – completely out of their element. As mentioned above, my dear friend moved away from Calgary several years ago to warm and sunny South Africa. The cold and the winter in Canada is typically something to avoid if you can – as mentioned above it gets cold and mean outside. My friend has had it fairly awesome since moving away so many years ago and this family photography session in Calgary was a stark reminder of the cold and bitter air temperature that she left. That being said though, the fun the family had together in the snow was so novel and fun – especially for their son…it was a beautiful moment to watch and have the opportunity to record for them forever.
Warmly,
Suzie
