Fort McMurray Twins
Multiple pregnancies are exciting for many reasons. After going through a triplet pregnancy myself, I completely understand the process – both the good and the bad that come of carrying more then one baby at a time. It is a stressful time growing more then one person in your tummy as there is a HUGE laundry list of things that can go wrong from the point of conception all the way to delivery – whenever that is. These twins were born on a very memorable day to a beautiful mother and fantastic daddy that were so eager to meet the two of them…except that excitement was short lived as these were the twins that were airlifted from the Fort McMurray wildfire the day the City was evacuated.
Fort McMurray Wildfire 2016
For those of you who have little to no clue what I am talking about, the City of Fort McMurray was devastated by wildfires in May 2016 and forced the entire City to evacuate…which was no easy feat. Mobilizing approximately 88,000 people to just grab what they can and flee was something that most people would have thought was impossible and it was a LOT of work – but the emergency responders did the unthinkable and guided all of those people out – through a raging inferno to safety. What about the people in the Fort McMurray hospital though – those in palliative care? Those who just had surgery? Those who just had TWINS? The wonderful hospital workers guided this beautiful Mama and her new babies to safety where they were able to stabilize and then be discharged – because these HANDSOME babies were both almost 8lbs each.

So how did I come to get to take these pictures? Mom and Dad obviously live in Fort McMurray, Alberta and I live near Red Deer, Alberta – it kinda seems like a stroke of good luck that we connected through their initial photographer from the Fort McMurray area who had been also displaced MANY hours from where Mom and Dad ended up and through the photography network I am part of on Facebook, that photographer and I began speaking and I agreed to do these beautiful images for the family.
It was such an honour to be able to help a family that had faced such adversity on one of the most exciting days of their lives. I so appreciated taking these images, but also getting to meet a new friend and have a first hand account told to me from the terror that the wildfire has caused to so many residents of the Fort McMurray, Alberta area. I hope that this wonderful family can relocated soon and head back home to their community and begin to create their lives together home.
