Red Deer Portrait Photography – and elsewhere too!
Red Deer portrait photography is a wonderful medium to photograph. I have been very lucky where I live to be accepted, appreciated and hired to capture some of Red Deer and Calgary’s most beautiful child/teen portraits. Portraits are becoming a dying artform these days because (at least in my opinion) it is just too easy to overlook them for a ‘selfie’ or for a cell phone picture with your friends. The other day I was actually looking up old Hollywood images of Leading Ladies from years gone by and the images of them were always elegant, glamorous and sophisticated. Sure – there were a lot of fun images too – especially of Marilyn Monroe – but if you look up Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly your Google image result page will have an endless stream of images that make you appreciate the skill of the photographer and the beauty and perfection women strived for in the ‘old days’ of Hollywood. While darkroom retouching certainly exists, the skill set was a lot different back in the day and an actual image isn’t nearly as forgiving as a digital one when it comes to retouching.
The time is now for Red Deer Portrait Photography
This had me thinking that during regular photography sessions, I should always try and catch one or two more ‘portrait’ style of images for my customers to choose from when we sit down together for their ordering session. If the image isn’t what the customer values, then we delete it and move along. More often than not however, I see the look in their eye that magic was captured and that are hooked on the idea of Red Deer Portrait Photography. We shouldn’t shy away from what we love in this world and portraits of our children and teenagers are really just a split second of time that we have captured and preserved. During that tender time of life when children and even teens change weekly in some cases (and hourly when it comes to my six year old) the opportunity to catch children being themselves and who they are exactly is unthought of – usually until it is too late when disaster strikes or the child, now young adult is packing their bags and heading off to post secondary. You will never get today’s smile back – nor attitude – nor charm. It will evolve overnight and become something more – something different then it was today and it will be gone forever.
A couple of years ago, I remember reading on Facebook how this one lady was trying to capture her ‘lasts’ with her family and be mindful of the requests, demands and needs of her children before they could do it themselves and her assistance wasn’t needed anymore. Her example was washing her daughter’s hair in the tub and then one night her daughter had told her that she could do it herself – and then proceeded to. I think about that story often and the sliver of grief that the Mother felt in that it was another stage that was complete knowing her little girl was another step closer to adulthood.
That is why Red Deer portrait photography is important – because tomorrow will never be today again and before you know it, a week will elapse, a year will elapse and all of a sudden your child will be an adult starting life on their own and the adventure of ‘adulting’ will begin.
Old Hollywood as an inspiration
I have been collecting some key items to do a few shoots in the next couple of weeks while it is super cold and sad in Alberta with a cold front moving in. We had such a beautiful fall and winter has been teasing us for a few weeks now, but sadly it is going to be damn cold this week and that means it’s time get creative.
Old Hollywood is going to be an inspiration for some basic shoots over the next while – and then once we begin to thaw out in April (ish) we will move this theme outside and make sure awesome magic. I am really excited about this and showing all of you some of the options for some fun Red Deer portrait photography ideas. A portrait session doesn’t have to just be serious afterall…
Warmly,
Suzie
