The Magic of Couples Photography
When Suzanne Taylor Photography runs her mini sessions in the fall months, classically the sessions are booked by families or by Mom and Dad for the kids because new photographs of them are well overdue. It is amazing how quick time flies by when you’re a parent. I never really understood that until I remember that my oldest is now 7 and my beautiful triplets are 5. How did that happen? Where did the time go? I am sure if you are a parent that sentiment is reflected as you sob yourself to bed thinking how close they are to moving out…(or thrilled…lol).
This year though, I had a few bookings that strayed from the typical and were booked by just a couple. I never really know during mini sessions who will show up as often what is discussed initially can change tenfold before the session happens – silly life. ANYWAY – I knew ahead of time that this couple was coming and when they showed up it was terrific because couples photography with old friends is always a lot of fun.
I happen to know this fellow from MANY years ago – well – a few at the very least. Steven and I went to the University of Calgary together and were part of the U of C Ski Club. If you were part of that scene – I don’t need to say much more, but if you were not here is a quick rundown. A bunch of University “adults” that like to ski but party at least as much if not more. We had a ton of fun in that club and were great friends. You know how school goes through…you attend, graduate and then turn around start your real life. This was also in 2004, and Facebook was just getting going, and the internet was not that exciting in my world yet. I remember MSN Chat and Hot or Not (yes…I can’t even hyperlink those anymore…lol), but that was about it. I used it briefly to research, to chat once in awhile, occasionally find a date – because that was taboo! The point is though, we didn’t stay in touch, and I missed my ski club friends. They were always a ton of fun, and such a great time to be with and over the years I have reconnected with a handful of them, and it has been excellent. So how did Steven end up in this photo shoot with his lovely lady?
It turns out that another AMAZING family photography session I shot this past June (2017) was his sister. The sister that owns the cutest and most lovely flower shop in Bentley (Earthy Accents) – the same sister who used to own the house we live in now.
We live in such a small world.
Couples Photography and Capturing the Relationship
Like I mentioned before, when you get to photograph couples that are old friends, those sessions run pretty fast and smooth. When you pair that with a guy that has a VERY eclectic sense of humour and a woman who is not only gorgeous but is also funny, patient and witty – you can only shoot magic. These two people are made for each other, and it shows so much in the images that I took that beautiful end of summer night. I love the warmth, beauty and natural moments that happened between this couple in such a beautiful summer setting. The light, the movement and the joy was something to capture during their photography session.
Why do Couples Photography?
Alberta has been struggling in the last few years in a way that few people in their 20’s and 30’s saw coming. Money is tight for a lot of people, and the ‘luxuries’ have been scaled down right? Have they though? I ask because really, in the last few months I have noticed a lot of people who have very little money to invest in photography have been going on vacations, buying new and fun toys, enjoying life in general. I am certainly not here to suggest people spend their money differently, but often a quick look at the finances shows you that photography can be fit into the budget. Why though?
Couples photography, in this case, is one of the few things you will spend a little bit of money on in your life that preserves this moment in life with your partner. Images like these are a souvenir of your life and tell your story – both individually and as a couple. It is amazing how quickly those days pass us by and the moments that make up our every day come and go. I watch it daily with my family, and while my Mom was always present with her camera for those critical moments (school things, birthday parties, Christmas, etc.), she missed a lot of those everyday things that made me who I am as a person. The excitement, the tears, the anger and the silly – those were missed. The same thing is true for couples. Those little things that make you a pair with your partner are so important and not taking the opportunity to capture them allow them to become moments lost forever.
Just a little bit of fun in about 20 minutes…what great memories for them forever.
Thank you so much to Steven and Edwina for booking Suzanne Taylor Photography but also for sharing a few moments of their lives with me. It was so much fun to photograph them both and share in their very entertaining relationship – lots of fun, laughter and entertainment.
Love,
Suzie
